Conference "7th EARSeL Workshop on Advances in RS and GIS Applications in Forest Fire Management"

The 7th International Workshop of the EARSeL Special Interest Group (SIG) on Forest Fires will take place in Matera, Italy, from 2 – 5 September 2009. The workshop is organized by the Institute of Environmental Analysis of the National Council Research in collaboration with the University of Alcalá and the European Agency. Matera workshop is the latest in a series of technical meetings organised by the EARSeL SIG on Forest Fires after its foundation in 1995. Previous meetings were held in Alcalá de Henares (1995), Luso (1998), Paris (2001), Ghent (2003), Zaragoza (2005) and Thessaloniki (2007) resulted in outstanding progress made in forest fire research. Since the main subject of the workshop will be the Space operational use of remote sensing in forest fire management paper contributions are expected to focus on the operational use of remote sensing in:
- pre-fire planning and management;
- fire detection and monitoring;
- post-fire evaluation and management;
- post-fire vegetation recovery assessment.

The main activities of the Workshop will include lectures given by invited speakers, poster sessions, a round-table discussion session and a field excursion. Selected papers presented during the workshop will be included in a special issue of a scientific journal related to forest fires and remote sensing. Previous workshops resulted in the publication of special issues of the International Journal of Remote Sensing, the Remote Sensing of Environment, Journal of Geophysical Research, and the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing. Full texts of the lectures given and the extended abstracts of papers presented will be included in the Proceedings book of the workshop.
