PGIS, Three Dimensional Modelling and Land Use Management in South Africa
The use of PGIS and three dimensional modeling in order to facilitate the development of land use management processes within three different rural communities in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa is discussed.
The first two case studies addresses land use management in an areas of conflict and high levels of distrust. Here three dimensional models facilitate careful and empowering communication processes leading to agreements on land uses which are then formally ratified by local and provincial government land management procedures.
The third case study explores the use of the three dimensional model in reaching flexible land use agreements in an area of peace and relative stability. In this case study, the actual building of the model assists in the deeping of the understanding of land form and usage.
