End of 2007 a project started to set up a remote sensing laboratory at the University of Kisangani and training staff members. The project was funded by the « VLIR » (Flemish Inter-University Council) for an amount of 100.000 Euro. With this amount computers (4), air-conditioning (2), generator, current stabilisator, hand-held GPS, printer etc. where bought and shipped to Kisangani, all basic materials for a modest remote sensing laboratory. Also the renovation of an old building was paid for. The projects aims to give formation to staff members of the agronomy faculty in order that the can start with own remote sensing projects and to give on the long term education in remote sensing themselves. A first session in formation in remote sensing took place in January 2009 and a second will take place in September 2009. The enthusiasm of the participants is overwhelming, since for them it is very rare to have such an education for free in the hart of Africa. The contribution will show that it is worth to invest in the education on university level in Africa.
